A historic port city in the southern part of West Bengal, northeastern India. Population 22,000 (1971). It is located on the west bank of the Roopnarayana River, which flows into the mouth of the Hooghly River (the main stream of the Ganges River until the 15th century). Its ancient name was Tāmralipti. It flourished as a gateway to the Ganga River basin from the Maurya Dynasty in the 3rd century BC until the 12th century. It is said to be the place where King Ashoka's son Mahinda set out to spread Buddhism in Sri Lanka, and Roman artifacts from the 1st to 3rd centuries have been excavated from the surrounding area. インド北東部,西ベンガル州南部の歴史的港市。人口2万2000(1971)。フーグリ川(15世紀までのガンガー(ガンジス)川本流)河口部に注ぐループナーラーヤナ川西岸に位置する。古名タームラリプティTāmralipti。前3世紀のマウリヤ朝以来12世紀まで,ガンガー川流域の門戸として栄えた。アショーカ王の王子マヒンダがスリランカに仏教伝道に出立した地と伝えられ,周辺からは1~3世紀のローマの遺物が出土している。
