The similar giant red barnacle B. t . volucano grows to a large size of over 4 cm in diameter and 5 cm in height, and mainly attaches to rock reefs near the low tide line facing the open ocean in the Southern Japan Warm Current Region. The shell is conical, almost cylindrical, with irregular longitudinal ribs on the surface and small downward-pointing spines on the lower half. ...
