Calico controversy - Calico

Japanese: キャラコ論争 - きゃらころんそう
Calico controversy - Calico

...the general term for the British Acts of 1700 and 1720 that restricted and prohibited the import of Indian cotton cloth by the East India Company. At the end of the 17th century, the British East India Company dramatically increased its imports of Indian cotton cloth, putting pressure on the traditional woolen textile industry and the silk weaving industry in Spitalfields, which became a political issue (the Calico Controversy). The controversy was not limited to Parliament, and large-scale demonstrations against the import of calico were repeated outside the House of Commons. In 1700, the import of printed cotton cloth was banned from the standpoint of protecting domestic textile manufacturers, and the 1720 Act further prohibited the import of all cotton cloth except for that for re-export, and even prohibited the use of most cotton cloth after the end of 1722.
