Brassaii - Brassaii (English spelling)

Brassaii - Brassaii (English spelling)

Hungarian-born French photographer. His real name was Gyula Halász. He was born in Brasso, Transylvania (now part of Romania). After studying painting in Budapest and Berlin, he went to Paris in 1923, where he adopted the name Brassai, meaning "man from Brasso." In Paris, he met fellow Hungarian André Kertész, who taught him the work of a journalist and the basics of photography. He abandoned painting to seek a new form of beauty in photography, and in 1933 published "Paris by Night," a photobook that recorded the mysterious charm of Montparnasse at night, which brought him into the limelight. When Paris was occupied during World War II, outdoor photography was banned by the Nazis, so he continued to engage in a wide range of activities, including painting, sculpture, and poetry. After the war, he returned to the photobook "Graffiti" (1956), which compiled images of graffiti on the walls of Paris, and also compiled documents of his friends Picasso and Henry Miller, leaving a valuable testimony of the era for future generations. He died in Nice.
