Companion star

In a binary system, the brighter star is called the primary star and is designated A, and the fainter star is called the companion star and is designated B. In a triple binary system, the faintest star is called the second companion star. Observations of the companion star of Sirius led to the discovery of white dwarfs and the degeneracy of matter.
