Linz - Linz (English spelling)

Japanese: リンツ - りんつ(英語表記)Linz
Linz - Linz (English spelling)

The capital of Upper Austria in northern Austria. Located at an altitude of 264 meters, the city has developed astride the Danube River. With a population of 183,504 (2001), it is the third largest city in Austria after Vienna, the capital, and Graz. There was a fortress there already in Roman times, and it was called Lentia. After it became the property of the Babenberg family in 1210, the urban area expanded, and it flourished as a crossroads between east-west traffic on the Danube River and north-south traffic on the "Salt Road" that runs from Salzkammergut to Bohemia. Since the Second World War, there has been an industrial cluster centered around a steelworks built in 1938, and it is one of Austria's leading heavy chemical industrial cities. It produces a wide variety of products, including steel, chemical fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, machinery, ships, tobacco, and glass products. In the old city area, there are Baroque, Gothic, and Renaissance-style buildings such as the cathedral, the Royal Palace Museum, and the state office building. Other attractions include Linz Castle and St. Martin's Church, which retains its 8th century Romanesque style.
