In the late Buyid period, the island of Kish, home to the Arab chieftain Qaisar's family, prospered from the early 11th century to the early 13th century, taking advantage of its location as the gateway to the Strait of Hormuz. However, when the Mongol Ilkhanate was established in Iran, prosperity shifted to the coastal town of Hormuz (now Minab), which was visited by such peoples as Odrik and Marco Polo, and its name became known throughout medieval Europe. In 1507, the Portuguese navigator A. de Albuquerque, second Viceroy of India, succeeded in subjugating the port's ruler, and in 15 he occupied it and made it a relay point for the spice trade in the Indian Ocean. ...
