A woven fabric with a pictorial design, mainly used as a wall hanging. Tapestry is French for tapestry. It is similar to tapestry in structure, with cotton or linen threads as the warp and dyed twisted wool (silk, gold, silver, etc.) threads as the weft, and is hand-woven with wooden needles. It reached its peak in the 13th and 14th centuries in northern France and Flanders, where it decorated the walls of churches and castles and became a symbol of wealth. From around the 15th century, sketches by famous artists began to be used, and in the 17th century, French Gobelins textiles became the norm.

絵画的な模様を表した織物で，おもに壁掛とされる。タピスリーはフランス語で英語ではタペストリーtapestry。組織は綴(つづれ)織と同種で綿または麻糸を経糸(たていと)とし，染色した毛（絹，金銀なども）の撚糸(よりいと)を緯(よこ)糸とし，木針などを用いて手工芸的に織る。13―14世紀ごろ北フランス，フランドル地方で最盛期を迎え，教会や城館建築の壁面を飾り，富の象徴ともなった。15世紀ごろから著名な画家の下絵が用いられるようになり，17世紀にはフランスのゴブラン織が中心となった。
