Greek physician. He practiced in Alexandria, but later moved Greek medicine to Rome (91 BC), where it flourished until the time of Galen. He was opposed to Hippocrates' humoral pathology theory, did not like medication, and placed emphasis on massage and water bath therapy. He distinguished between acute and chronic illnesses, and between tension and convulsion, and is said to have been the originator of tracheotomy. He is also said to have been a pioneer in the humane treatment of the mentally ill.

A Greek poet who lived around 270 B.C. One of the leading epigram poets of the Hellenistic period. He was characterized by his learning and delicate sensibility. His poems are collected in the Greek Anthology.

ギリシアの医者。アレクサンドリアに開業したが,のちにギリシア医学をローマに移した (前 91) 。その医学はガレノスの時代までローマで盛んに行われた。ヒポクラテスの体液病理説に反対で,投薬を好まず,マッサージ,水浴療法を重視した。病気を急性と慢性とに区別し,緊張とけいれんを分け,気管切開の創始者といわれる。また,精神障害者に対する人道的取扱いの先駆者ともいわれる。

前 270年頃在世のギリシアの詩人。ヘレニズム時代の代表的エピグラム詩人の一人。学殖と繊細な感受性を特色とする。『ギリシア詞華集』に約 40編の詩が収められている。
