Uramoto Village

...Itoigawa City occupies the area downstream of Hime River in the southwest of Niigata Prefecture. In 1954, Itoigawa Town and the eight villages of Uramoto, Shimohayakawa, Kamihayakawa, Yamatogawa, Nishiumi, Ono, Nechi, and Kotaki merged to form a city. Population 32,931 (1995). The Hakuba Mountain Range and Kubiki Hills extend to the south, and the mountainous area is widespread, and is included in the Joshinetsu Plateau, Chubu Sangaku National Park, and Hakuba Sanroku Prefectural Natural Park. The name of the city is said to come from the river inhabited by stickleback fish. The Itoigawa-Shizuoka Tectonic Line on the western edge of the Fossa Magna passes through the valley of the Hime River, and this line divides the Tertiary System in the east from the Paleozoic System in the west, making it an important geological region. ...

…新潟県南西部，姫川の下流一帯を占める市。1954年糸魚川町と浦本，下早川，上早川，大和川，西海，大野，根知，小滝の8村が合体，市制。人口3万2931(1995)。白馬連峰と頸城（くびき）丘陵が南に展開し，山地が広く，上信越高原および中部山岳国立公園と白馬山麓県立自然公園に含まれている。地名はトゲウオ科のイトヨの生息する川に由来するという。フォッサマグナ西縁の糸魚川‐静岡構造線が姫川の谷を通り，これを境に東の第三系と西の古生界を分かつ，地質学上重要な地域である。…
