...Itoigawa City occupies the area downstream of Hime River in the southwest of Niigata Prefecture. In 1954, Itoigawa Town and the eight villages of Uramoto, Shimohayakawa, Kamihayakawa, Yamatogawa, Nishiumi, Ono, Nechi, and Kotaki merged to form a city. Population 32,931 (1995). The Hakuba Mountain Range and Kubiki Hills extend to the south, and the mountainous area is widespread, and is included in the Joshinetsu Plateau, Chubu Sangaku National Park, and Hakuba Sanroku Prefectural Natural Park. The name of the city is said to come from the river inhabited by stickleback fish.
