Antilock Braking System

A type of safe and effective braking system for automobiles. Also known as ABS (antilock brake system). A braking system for automobiles that prevents the tires from stopping to rotate (called lock) and skidding (called skid) when braking in an emergency or on a slippery road, allowing the tires to obtain maximum friction and maintain their course. The friction between the tires and the road surface is greater when the tires are rotating while being braked than when they are locked, and when the tires are locked, steering becomes ineffective. For this reason, a computer is used to ease the braking force when the tires are about to lock, and to apply the brakes again when they start to rotate, repeating this control until the vehicle comes to a stop.

自動車における安全・効果的な制動システムの１種。ABS（antilock brake systemの略）とも。緊急時やすべりやすい路面でブレーキをかけたとき，タイヤの回転が止まり（これをロックという）横滑りする（これをスキッドという）のを防止して，タイヤが最大の摩擦力を得られるようにするとともに進路を保持する自動車のブレーキシステム。タイヤと路面の間の摩擦力は，タイヤが制動をうけながら回転している状態のときの方がロックした状態のときよりも大きく，またロック状態では舵が効かなくなる。このためコンピューターを利用して，ロック状態になりかかるとブレーキ力をゆるめ，回転し出すとまたブレーキをかけるという制御を車体が停止するまで繰り返して行う。
