UA - Unit of Action

Japanese: UA - UA/ゆーえー(英語表記)Unit of Action
UA - Unit of Action
This is the provisional name for the new unit organization system of the US Army, and has not been used since around 2007. Like the armies of many countries, the US Army is also shifting its basic combat unit from the division (12,000-18,000 personnel) to the brigade (around 5,000 personnel). A brigade is a basic combat unit that combines one combat regiment (2,500-3,000 personnel) with support units such as communications, reconnaissance, medical, and supply units. Although it is smaller than a division, it can operate independently just like a division. This brigade is called a "Unit of Action (UA)," and as a higher command organization that brings together several brigades, a "Unit of Employment X (UEX)" and a higher organization, a "Unit of Employment Y (UEY)," are organized as necessary. A corps with two or more divisions is equivalent to a UEX, and an army with several corps is equivalent to a UEY. After formation, UA will take on the name of an existing brigade or division, UEX will take on the name of a corps, and UEY will take on the name of an army. 18 to 21 UEXs will be formed, and they will have headquarters structures in peacetime and specific UAs will be assigned to them, but they do not always act as a unified UEX. There are 960 headquarters personnel, and the commander is usually a major general, but a lieutenant general will be appointed when stationed overseas for a long period of time. The United States has notified Japan of its intention to set up the UEX headquarters at Camp Zama in Kanagawa Prefecture and prepare for emergency deployment in Asia, and the Japanese government has agreed to accept it. UEYs are responsible for specific theaters, and the formation of five UEYs for North America, South America, the Middle East, Asia, and Europe/Africa is being considered. There are 1,120 headquarters personnel.
