It is also called red ochre, Indian red, Venetian red, Turkey red, vermilion, vermilion red, and red iron. _It is a red inorganic pigment mainly composed of iron oxide _Fe2O3 , and is produced by either the dry method of heating and roasting iron sulfate(II) or the wet method of producing yellow iron oxide from iron sulfate(II) and then roasting it. Types of red iron oxide include α-FeOOH (yellow), γ-FeOOH (orange), α- _Fe2O3 (red), and γ- _Fe2O3 ( _brown ). The color and properties of these iron oxide pigments vary depending on _the manufacturing method and conditions.

代赭（たいしや），インド赤，ベネチアン赤，ターキー赤，血朱，鉄朱，鉄丹などとも呼ばれる。酸化鉄Fe₂O₃を主体とする赤色無機顔料で，硫酸鉄(II)を加熱焙焼（ばいしよう）する乾式法か，硫酸鉄(II)より湿式法で黄色酸化鉄をつくり焙焼する湿式法によって製造される。べんがらの種類としてα‐FeOOH(黄)，γ‐FeOOH(だいだい)，α‐Fe₂O₃(赤)，γ‐Fe₂O₃(褐)などがある。これら酸化鉄系の顔料の色調，性質は製法，製造条件などにより多様である。
