This Rococo palace stands in the northeastern part of the vast Sanssouci Park, which spreads west of Potsdam, the capital of Brandenburg, about 30 km southwest of Berlin, the capital of northeastern Germany. Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786), described as the Great, designed it himself as a summer palace, and Knobalsdorff began construction based on that design in 1745, completing it just two years later in 1747. Although it is a small palace with only one floor and 12 rooms, Frederick II used it as his castle rather than a summer palace. There is an "Oval Hall" in the center and "Circular Halls" on both ends, as well as a garden with a large windmill to the west. ◇"Sanssouci" is a French word meaning "without sorrow". For this reason, it is translated into Japanese as "Muyukyu" (Place of Worry). Source: Kodansha World Tourist Attractions Encyclopedia Information |
