...Abstract sculpture was born in the 1930s with the activities of Tony Smith (1912- ) and A. Calder, followed by L. Nevelson and Isamu Noguchi. Sculpture, which has something in common with Abstract Expressionism in painting, appeared after World War II, and in the field of assemblage that emerged in the 1950s, Joseph Cornell (1903-73) and Edward Kienholz (1927-94) were active. Pop Art and Primary Structures sculpture (Donald Judd (1928-94) and others) have continued to interact with each other to this day.
