A small perennial plant of the Campanulaceae family. It is widely distributed in the temperate and cool temperate zones of eastern Asia. It grows in the shade of trees in mountainous areas throughout Japan. The underground stem is white and thread-like, branching long and thin, and the tip rises to become an aboveground stem about 10 cm in height. It has sparse, alternate, oval leaves 1 to 2 cm in diameter. From spring to summer, a long flower stalk grows from the tip of the stem, producing solitary white bell-shaped flowers several mm long. The corolla is deeply divided into five parts, appearing star-shaped at first glance.
