The main river length is 107 km, and the total drainage area is 1,460 km2. It collects many tributaries, such as the Inaba River, Ogata River, and Okudake River, and empties into Beppu Bay at Tsurusaki in Oita city. The Toyohashi Main Line runs almost along this valley, forming the eastern part of the Oita Plain downstream, and is used as a water source for the Oita-Tsurusaki coastal industrial area built at the mouth of the river, as well as a source of water for the well-developed irrigation canals in the basin.
