An epiphytic perennial fern of the Polypodiaceae family (illustration), which opens its leaves in early autumn and sheds them in midsummer. The rhizome is long and creeping, gray-green, 4-5 mm in diameter, and the scales fall off quickly, leaving the gray-green rhizome exposed. The Japanese name, Aonekazura, comes from this. The leaves are single-pinnate, deeply lobed, broadly lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 15-40 cm long, covered on both sides with fine white soft hairs, and feel velvety to the touch. The leaf surface is white-green, and the veins form a large row of meshes on both sides of the rachis, with one free vein within each mesh, on which fairly large sporangia grow.
