Iwatsuki [city] - Iwatsuki

Japanese: 岩槻[市] - いわつき
Iwatsuki [city] - Iwatsuki
An old city in eastern Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies a plateau and alluvial lowlands through which the Ayase River and Motoarakawa River flow. The city center was the castle town of Iwatsuki Castle, which is said to have been built by Ota Dokan, and was also a post town and market town on the Nikko Onari Kaido road. The Tohoku Expressway, National Route 16 and Route 122 intersect here, and the Tobu Noda Line runs through the city. Traditional industries have been famous since the early modern period, including Iwatsuki dolls such as Hina dolls, which are the largest in the country despite being a cottage industry, and paulownia crafts (chests of drawers and shuttlecocks). Since the opening of the Tohoku Expressway in 1972, electrical equipment, metal, and general equipment industries have flourished. Rice, greenhouse gardening, and vegetable cultivation are carried out in the surrounding area. Jionji Temple in the north is a famous temple and the 12th temple of the Bandō Pilgrimage. There are many Jomon ruins, such as the Shinpukuji shell mound. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Saitama City and became Iwatsuki Ward. Area: 49.16 km2 . Population: 110,110 (2003).
