A species of bird in the family Cuculidae, or a general term for the same family. The Eurasian little cuckoo ( Cuculus poliocephalus ) (illustration) is a species of cuckoo, 28 cm long, with a dark gray back and throat and a white and black horizontal stripe on the underside. Sexes are the same color, but females sometimes have reddish brown plumage. It is very similar to the common cuckoo and the common cuckoo, but this species is slightly smaller. It breeds in eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Primorsky Krai, and migrates to South Asia and the Greater Sunda Islands in autumn and winter.

ホトトギス目ホトトギス科の鳥の1種，または同科の総称。ホトトギスCuculus poliocephalus(英名Eurasian little cuckoo)（イラスト）はカッコウ類の1種で，全長28cm，背面とのどは暗灰色，腹面は白と黒の横縞模様をしている。雌雄同色だが，雌にはまれに全体に赤褐色の羽色をした赤色型がある。カッコウやツツドリによく似ているが，この種のほうがひとまわり以上小さい。ヒマラヤから沿海州にかけてのアジアの東部で繁殖し，秋･冬季には南アジアや大スンダ列島に渡る。
