Okubo (Akita)

...Located on the southeast shore of Lake Hachirogata, the town is divided into the Taihei Mountains to the east and includes part of the Tenno Sandbar that blocks the southern part of Lake Hachirogata to the west. Okubo, the town in the center, developed as a post town on the Ushu Kaido road in the early modern period, and from the Meiji period onwards, it was a popular place to make pickled smelt and icefish caught in Lake Hachirogata, but this declined after the reclamation of Lake Hachirogata. Toyokawa has been known as a producer of bitumen (asphalt) since the early modern period, and the Toyokawa oil fields were developed in the Taisho period, and oil mining was active in the early Showa period, but today natural gas is the main source of oil.
