Oicho Kabu

Japanese: おいちょかぶ
Oicho Kabu
A type of gambling using stock cards, played mainly in the Kyoto-Osaka region. Hanafuda cards are sometimes used, in which case 40 cards are used, excluding the eight cards for November (ame) and December (kiri). The player who adds up the number of cards turned over and the number in his/her hand that ends in 9 or the number closest to 9 wins. There are various other winning stipulations. "Oicho" refers to the number 8 on the turned over card or the number whose total ends in 8, and "kabu" refers to the number 9.

主として京阪地方で行われた,株札を用いた賭博の1種。花札を使うこともあり,この場合は 11月 (雨) ,12月 (桐) の8枚の札を除き,40枚で行う。めくり札と手札の数を合せ,末尾の数が9もしくは9に最も近い数をもって勝ちとする。ほかに種々の役上がりがある。「おいちょ」はめくり札の8の数または合計数字の末尾が8になる数をいい,「かぶ」とは9の数をいう。
