…The change in sailing rigging in the second half of the 15th century was so rapid that Columbus’s Santa Maria, which set sail from Spain in 1492, is estimated to have been a small carrack of less than 100 tons. However, in addition to the three sails mentioned above, it also had a small sprit sail under the bowsprit that protruded diagonally forward from the bow, and a small topsail on the main mast. Thus, by the end of the 15th century, the basis of the full-rigged ship with three masts and a bowsprit was established, which would go on to dominate the mainstream of sailing ships in the Western world. It is almost hard to believe the great feats that this newborn three-masted ocean-going sailing ship accomplished in just the next 20 years or so. …
