…The change in sailing rigging in the second half of the 15th century was so rapid that Columbus’s Santa Maria, which set sail from Spain in 1492, is estimated to have been a small carrack of less than 100 tons. However, in addition to the three sails mentioned above, it also had a small sprit sail under the bowsprit that protruded diagonally forward from the bow, and a small topsail on the main mast. Thus, by the end of the 15th century, the basis of the full-rigged ship with three masts and a bowsprit was established, which would go on to dominate the mainstream of sailing ships in the Western world. It is almost hard to believe the great feats that this newborn three-masted ocean-going sailing ship accomplished in just the next 20 years or so. …

…15世紀後半の帆装の変化は非常に早く，1492年にスペインを出帆したコロンブスのサンタ･マリア号は100トン足らずの小型キャラックと推定されているが，それでも上記の3枚のほかに船首から斜め前方に突出したバウスプリットの下に小型の横帆(スプリットセール)を張り，またメーンマストの上にも小型の横帆(トップスル)を張っている。　こうして15世紀末には3本マストとバウスプリットを備える全装帆船full‐rigged shipの基本ができたわけで，今後これが西方世界の帆船の主流を占めることになる。　この生まれたての3本マストの航洋帆船が，その後わずか20年ほどの間に成し遂げた偉業はほとんど信じがたいくらいである。…
