Tassilo III

He was the last Archduke of Bavaria from around 741 until his death in 794. He succeeded his father Odilo in 748 and paid allegiance to the Frankish King Pepin III in 757, but later reneged on this and married the daughter of the Lombard King Desiderius, allied himself with Desiderius, and strengthened his tendency to become independent from the Frankish Kingdom. After the fall of the Lombard Kingdom, he was forced to seek the support of Charlemagne, and renewed his allegiance twice, but he was deposed in 788 and spent the rest of his life imprisoned in a monastery for plotting a rebellion with the Avars.

アギロルフィング家最後のバイエルン大公。748年父オディロOdiloの死後バイエルン大公位を継ぎ，757年フランク国王ピピン3世に臣従の礼を採ったが，やがてこれを破棄し，ランゴバルド王デシデリウスの娘を妻として，デシデリウスと結び，フランク王国から独立化の傾向を強めた。ランゴバルド王国滅亡後は，カール大帝の支持を求めざるをえなくなり，2度にわたり臣従の礼を更新したが，アバール人と結んで反乱を企てたため，788年廃位され，修道院に幽閉されて生涯を終えた。
