1841‐1931 French social psychologist. He discussed crowd psychology and is one of the origins of modern social psychology. He started out as a doctor, but his broad interests led him to study archaeology and anthropology, and gradually he turned to social psychology. What made him immortal was his 1895 work, La psychologie des foules. A crowd is a human group in which all individuals completely lose their conscious personality and act according to the suggestions of the person controlling them.
