A river that flows through northern Nagano Prefecture. It is the largest tributary of the Chikuma River. It is 153 km long. The Narai River and Azusa River join together in the northeast of Matsumoto City to form the Sai River, which then joins with the Takase River at Akashina in Azumino City and flows north through the Chikuma Mountains. It joins with the Susobana River near the urban area of Nagano City and the Chikuma River near Kawanakajima. In the Matsumoto Basin in the upper reaches and the Nagano Basin in the lower reaches, the river becomes rough due to the development of wide floodplains, but in the Chikuma Mountains it is a pre-disciplined river that meanders through deep valleys, with river terraces distributed everywhere, and beautiful gorges such as Yamakiyo-ji and Kume-ji. From 1832, there was boat transport between Shinmura in Matsumoto City and Shinshu-shinmachi in Nagano City, but this mission ended with the opening of the Shinonoi Line and National Route 19. It also serves as a source of hydroelectric power.SaigawaSaigawaSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
