Saigawa

Japanese: 犀川 - さいがわ
Saigawa
A river that flows through northern Nagano Prefecture. It is the largest tributary of the Chikuma River. It is 153 km long. The Narai River and Azusa River join together in the northeast of Matsumoto City to form the Sai River, which then joins with the Takase River at Akashina in Azumino City and flows north through the Chikuma Mountains. It joins with the Susobana River near the urban area of Nagano City and the Chikuma River near Kawanakajima. In the Matsumoto Basin in the upper reaches and the Nagano Basin in the lower reaches, the river becomes rough due to the development of wide floodplains, but in the Chikuma Mountains it is a pre-disciplined river that meanders through deep valleys, with river terraces distributed everywhere, and beautiful gorges such as Yamakiyo-ji and Kume-ji. From 1832, there was boat transport between Shinmura in Matsumoto City and Shinshu-shinmachi in Nagano City, but this mission ended with the opening of the Shinonoi Line and National Route 19. It also serves as a source of hydroelectric power.

It extends from the upper and middle reaches of the Imagawa and Haraigawa rivers, which flow into the Suo-Nada Sea, to the northern slope of the Hiko Mountains. It was incorporated as a town in 1943. In 1956, the villages of Shiroi and Irahara were incorporated. In 2006, it was merged with the towns of Katsuyama and Toyotsu to become Miyako Town. It is long and narrow from north to south, and its southern part borders Oita Prefecture. Most of it is mountainous. The central area, Honjo, is located on the alluvial plain of the Imagawa River. The main industry is agriculture, with rice and wheat grown, as well as chestnuts and lumber. In the northern part, there are scattered ancient tombs around Kiyama and the valley mouth, and the national historic site Goshogatani Kamigoishi (→ Kamigoishi ). At the southern end, there is the Naganuma Family House, a national important cultural property, and Notoge and Hebibuchinotaki waterfalls, which are part of the Yaba-Hita-Hikosan Quasi-National Park.

A river that flows through the center of the Kanazawa Plain in Ishikawa Prefecture. Its total length is about 37 km. The Kuratani River, which originates at Mt. Daimon (1,572 m) on the border with Toyama Prefecture, and the Futamata River, which originates at Mt. Naradake (1,644 m), join together to form the Sai River, which flows northwest through Kanazawa City and empties into the Sea of Japan at Kanaishi. Kanaishi at the river's mouth is part of Kanazawa Port. Since the Edo period, water has been drawn into the city of Kanazawa through the Tatsumi Irrigation Canal and the Kurazuki Irrigation Canal, and has been used for irrigation, fire prevention, and industrial water. The Sai River Dam was completed upstream in 1965.
