The Finnish Art Society (founded in 1848) made a major contribution to the development of modern art in Finland. The first Finnish landscape painter, who was an enthusiast of the Düsseldorf School, was Werner Holmberg (1830-60). The Golden Age of Modern Finnish Art began at the end of the 19th century, and its first notable painter was Albert Edelfelt (1854-1905), who introduced the new French painting style to the country through his depictions of everyday life and portraits.
