In German it is called Kronstadt, and in Hungarian it is called Brassó. It is the capital of Brasov County (area 5,351 km2 , population 642,500 (1992 estimate)) in central Romania. It is located at the northern foot of the South Carpathians. The inhabitants are Hungarians, Germans, and Romanians. It was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1211, and has since developed as a transportation and commercial center connecting Transylvania with Moldova and Wallachia to the south. There are large factories that manufacture tractors, trucks, bearings, etc., and industries such as textiles, lumber, and food are also well developed. There is an industrial university and a national theater. The Gothic Black Cathedral, built between 1385 and 1477, is famous. There are many other historical buildings, such as the 15th century town hall and the 16th century clock tower. Population 323,835 (1992 estimate).

ドイツ語ではクロンシュタット Kronstadt,ハンガリー語ではブラショー Brassó。ルーマニア中部,ブラショブ県 (面積 5351km2。人口 64万 2500〈1992推計〉) の県都。南カルパート山脈の北麓に位置する。住民はハンガリー人,ドイツ人,ルーマニア人から成る。 1211年ドイツ騎士団によって建設され,以後トランシルバニア地方と南のモルドバ,ワラキア地方を結ぶ交通,商業の要地として発達。トラクタ,トラック,ベアリングなどを製造する大工場があり,繊維,製材,食品などの工業も発達。工業大学,国立劇場がある。 1385~1477年に建設されたゴシック様式の「黒聖堂」は有名。ほかに 15世紀の市庁舎,16世紀の時計塔など歴史的建築物が多い。人口 32万 3835 (1992推計) 。
