A general term for birds in the Nyctibiidae family. This family consists of one genus and five species, and is distributed in tropical America and the West Indies from Mexico to Brazil and Paraguay. Total length is 40 to 50 cm. It resembles the Old World frogmouth (illustration), and its plumage is camouflaged with brown or gray. It has long wings and tail, and very short legs. Like other nightjars, it has a small beak but a very large mouth. It is a resident bird that lives in relatively open forests, shrubs, forest edges, and plantations. ヨタカ目タチヨタカ科Nyctibiidaeの鳥の総称。この科は1属5種よりなり,メキシコからブラジル,パラグアイまでの熱帯アメリカと西インド諸島に分布する。全長40~50cm。旧世界のガマグチヨタカに似た鳥で(イラスト),羽色も褐色ないし灰色を主とした隠ぺい色である。翼と尾は長く,脚は非常に短い。他のヨタカ目の鳥と同様に,くちばしは小さいが,口は非常に大きい。比較的開けた森林,灌木林,林縁,農園などに留鳥としてすむ。
