A history book from the Tang Dynasty in China. Written by Liu Zhiji. Includes a preface from the 4th year of the Jinglong era (710). 20 volumes, 36 inner chapters, and 13 outer chapters. Written in the Benrei style, with crisp, clear logic, the book critiques the structure and narration of ancient Chinese history books, and mercilessly criticizes the Duke of Zhou, Confucius, Sima Qian, and Ban Gu, leading to criticism that the book insults the saints. In the chapter on ancient and modern official histories, the book develops the history of Chinese historiography for the first time, and in the chapter on doubts about ancient times, it asserts that the abdications of Yao, Shun, and Yu were usurps. As a result, it was not read much and fell out of circulation, until Song dynasty versions were discovered during the Jiajing (1522-66) and Wanli (1573-1619) periods of the Ming dynasty, and were reprinted into versions by Lu Shen, Zhang Zhixiang, and Zhang Dingsi, among others. Annotations included Guo Kongyan's commentary, Wang Weijian's supplementary explanations, Huang Shulin's supplementary explanations, and Pu Qilong's interpretation, and during the Qing dynasty, Ji Yun's Shi Tong Shaofang was widely used.
