A method for synthesizing hydrocarbons by hydrogenating carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst. Also known as the FT synthesis method. Invented by F. Fischer and H. Tropsch in the 1920s. Water gas is passed over a catalyst mainly made of iron, cobalt, and nickel at normal pressure and around 200°C to obtain mainly paraffinic and olefinic hydrocarbons. During World War II, it was used in Germany, France, and Japan to produce synthetic petroleum. → Related topics Gasoline | Synthetic oil Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
