Fischer synthesis

Japanese: フィッシャー合成 - フィッシャーごうせい

A method for synthesizing hydrocarbons by hydrogenating carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst. Also known as the FT synthesis method. Invented by F. Fischer and H. Tropsch in the 1920s. Water gas is passed over a catalyst mainly made of iron, cobalt, and nickel at normal pressure and around 200°C to obtain mainly paraffinic and olefinic hydrocarbons. During World War II, it was used in Germany, France, and Japan to produce synthetic petroleum.

触媒存在下での一酸化炭素の水素化による炭化水素の合成法。F-T合成法とも。1920年代にF.フィッシャーとH.トロプシュが発明。水性ガスを常圧，200℃内外で鉄，コバルト，ニッケルを主体とする触媒上に通じて，主としてパラフィン系，オレフィン系炭化水素を得る。第２次大戦中，ドイツ，フランス，日本で人造石油の製造を目的として利用された。
