Front Army

Japanese: 方面軍 - ほうめんぐん

An operational army positioned between the Imperial General Headquarters or General Army, the highest commanding authority of the former Japanese Army, and an army made up of several divisions. An area army is usually made up of two or three armies, such as the North China Area Army during the Sino-Japanese War and the Burma Area Army during the Pacific War. The commander of an area army is an army general, and the headquarters (former Japanese Army) is made up of about 500 personnel from the staff, administration, weapons, accounting, medical, veterinary, and legal departments. In the event of war or incident, an area army is responsible for operations in a certain area under the direct command of the Imperial General Headquarters or General Army.

旧日本陸軍最高の指揮機関である〈大本営〉または〈総軍〉と数個の師団等から編成される〈軍〉との中間に位置する作戦軍。方面軍は通常2～3個軍を基幹として編成され，日中戦争時の〈北支那方面軍〉，太平洋戦争時の〈ビルマ方面軍〉等がある。方面軍司令官は陸軍大将で，その司令部(旧日本軍)の組織は，幕僚，管理部，兵器部，経理部，軍医部，獣医部および法務部の約500名の要員から成る。方面軍は，戦争または事変において，大本営または総軍の直接指揮をうけて某方面の作戦を担任する。
