Gan Island in Adou Atoll, at the southern tip of the country, was used by the UK as a military base under an agreement even after independence. It is located about 700 km north of Diego Garcia Island in the Chagos Archipelago, where the US military base is located, and is an important strategic point in the Indian Ocean. After the complete withdrawal of British troops in March 1976, the Soviet Union applied to lease the island, which still had airport facilities, but in 1981 the Maldivian government rejected the offer and announced its decision to develop the island as a free trade and tourist resort. ...
