Girikugai - Girikugai

...In particular, in many places, visiting or attending funerals is simply called giri. The word kugai, meaning public or world, is also used in the same sense (kugai), or in some regions it is used in conjunction with giri kugai to refer to non-relatives attending a funeral dressed as if they were relatives. Naturally, it is also used at times other than funerals, and in some regions giri or otsukiai refers to helping with rice planting or roofing without compensation, a usage unique to village life where reciprocity can be expected.
