Natsushima Shell Mound

This Jomon archaeological site is located in Natsushima-cho, Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, at the base of the Miura Peninsula. Until the early Taisho era, Natsushima was a small island floating in the sea, but now the surrounding area has been reclaimed and factories are lined up. The shell mound is located near the eastern end of the island, about 50 meters above sea level, and measures about 14 meters east to west and 13 meters north to south. The archaeology laboratory of Meiji University conducted two surveys in 1950 and 1955, and most of the site was excavated. Three shell layers were piled up neatly with a layer of soil in between, and early pottery of various types (Igusa type, Daimaru type, Natsushima type, Tato lower layer type, Tato upper layer type, Shiboguchi type, Kayama type, etc.) were excavated in strata order. The Natsujima-type pottery that constitutes the majority of this shell mound has been accompanied by pebble tools, stone arrowheads, stone plates, bone arrowheads, bone points, antler fishhooks, and shell rings. C-14 dating of charcoal and shells excavated from the Natsujima Formation gave a value of about 9,000 years ago, which caused quite a stir. There are other shell mounds in other parts of the island. 三浦半島の基部、神奈川県横須賀(よこすか)市夏島町にある縄文遺跡。夏島は大正の初年までは海中に浮かぶ小島であったが、現在は周囲が埋め立てられ、工場などが並ぶ。貝塚は標高約50メートルの島の東端近くにあり、東西14メートル、南北13メートルほどの規模をもつ。1950、55年（昭和25、30）の2回にわたり、明治大学考古学研究室による調査が行われ、その大半が発掘された。中間に土層を挟んで三つの貝層が整然と堆積(たいせき)し、早期の各型式の土器（井草(いぐさ)式、大丸(だいまる)式、夏島式、田戸(たと)下層式、田戸上層式、子母口(しぼぐち)式、茅山(かやま)式など）が層位的に出土した。この貝塚の主体をなす夏島式土器には、礫器(れっき)、石鏃(せきぞく)、石皿、骨鏃(こつぞく)、骨製の尖頭(せんとう)器、鹿角(ろっかく)製の釣り針、貝輪などが伴出した。夏島層出土の木炭と貝殻によるC‐14年代の測定は約9000年前という数値を示し、大きな話題をよんだことがある。島の他の地点には、別の貝塚も存在する。史跡。
