Christopher Isherwood

British novelist. The only prose writer who belonged to the "Auden Group" of the 1930s. His representative works include the trilogy known as "Berlin Stories," set in Berlin before the rise of the Hitler regime: "Mr. Norris Changes Trains" (1935), "Sally Bowles" (1937), and "Farewell, Berlin" (1939, translated into Japanese as "The Helpless People"). He also wrote several experimental verse dramas in collaboration with Auden and a war memoir of his service in the Sino-Japanese War. After the outbreak of World War II, he moved to the United States with Auden, and wrote novels such as "A Single Man" (1964), as well as screenplays for Hollywood films.

イギリスの小説家。1930年代の「オーデン・グループ」に属する唯一の散文作家。代表作にはヒトラー政権出現前のベルリンを舞台にした『ベルリン物語』の名でよばれる三部作『ノリス氏汽車を乗り替える』（1935）、『サリー・ボウルズ』（1937）、『ベルリンよ、さらば』（1939、邦訳名『救いなき人々』）がある。ほかにオーデンと合作で数編の実験的詩劇と日中戦争従軍記を書いた。第二次世界大戦勃発(ぼっぱつ)後、オーデンとともにアメリカに移住、『シングル・マン』（1964）などの小説の創作のかたわら、ハリウッドの映画の脚本も執筆した。
