Bookbinder - Seihonkou

Japanese: 製本工 - せいほんこう

A person who specializes in binding hand-copied sheets or printed copies into a single volume to prevent their loss and to facilitate their reading. Bookbinding has a long history that began with the creation of books.

In the days when books were mainly hand-copied in monastic manuscript workshops, binding was usually done by monks within the monastery as well. However, from around the 12th century, as the so-called "era of secularization" began and manuscript production shifted from monasteries to secular scribes, the professional occupation of bookbinders emerged.

手写した紙葉または印刷された刷本（すりほん）を，散逸を防ぎ繙読（はんどく）の便をはかるために一本にまとめる仕事を専門とする人。製本は書物の成立とともに始まる古い歴史をもっている。

　書物が主として修道院の写本工房で手写されていた時代には，装本も修道院内部において，修道士により行われるのが通例であった。しかし，12世紀ごろより，いわゆる〈世俗化の時代〉に入り，写本の生産が修道院から世俗の写字生の手に移るに従って，専門職としての装丁師(製本工)が出現する。
