A person who specializes in binding hand-copied sheets or printed copies into a single volume to prevent their loss and to facilitate their reading. Bookbinding has a long history that began with the creation of books. [Europe] In the days when books were mainly hand-copied in monastic manuscript workshops, binding was usually done by monks within the monastery as well. However, from around the 12th century, as the so-called "era of secularization" began and manuscript production shifted from monasteries to secular scribes, the professional occupation of bookbinders emerged.
