A bird of the Charadriiformes, Charadriidae family (illustration). Total length approximately 32 cm. A large plover with a long crest. It breeds in the mid-latitudes of Eurasia from Europe to southern Siberia, and migrates a little south in winter. It mainly migrates to Japan as a winter bird, but a small number breed in Ishikawa, Niigata, Fukui, Ibaraki, and other prefectures. The head, hind neck, back, and wings are shiny black. The upper tail coverts are orange-chestnut brown, and the tail is white at the base and black at the tip. The underside of the wings has black flight feathers and white coverts, creating a striking contrast.

チドリ目チドリ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約32cm。長い冠羽をもった大型のチドリ。ヨーロッパからシベリア南部にかけてのユーラシア大陸の中緯度地方で繁殖し，冬は少し南へ移動する。日本にはおもに冬鳥として渡来するが，石川，新潟，福井，茨城など諸県では少数が繁殖している。頭上，後頸（こうけい），背，翼は黒くて光沢がある。上尾筒は橙栗色，尾は基部が白く先が黒い。翼の下面は風切が黒く，雨覆は白色で対照が著しい。
