Strictly speaking, it refers to the art of the Eastern Roman Empire, which chronologically spans the period from the founding of Constantinople in 330 to its capture by Muslims in the mid-15th century (1453), and is geographically limited to the territory of the empire (the borders of which fluctuated significantly over time). However, in the strict sense of the word, Byzantine art is surrounded in time and space by other Christian art such as Coptic art, Syrian art, Armenian art, Georgian art, Italian art (up to the 13th century), and Russian art, and traces of Byzantine art remain particularly strong in the Balkan region.
