A Confucian scholar and Shintoist from the mid-Edo period. Born in Tosa. Commonly known as Tanzaburo, his pen name was Jinzan. At a young age, he went to Kyoto to study Confucianism and Shintoism under Yamazaki Ansai and Asami Keisai. After returning to Japan, he studied calendar studies under Shibukawa Shunkai in Edo. In his prime, he was summoned by the feudal lord and joined the Confucian scholars, but was later convicted and ordered to live in seclusion. During that time, he studied national scriptures extensively, perfecting his studies and preaching the "signs of the national polity," which had a great influence on later generations. His works include Jindai no Maki Shiotsuchiden, Nakatomi no Harae Shiotsuchiden, Hoken Daiki Uchiki, Tosa Kokushiki Shako, and Jinzanshu, and he also compiled many other books that explored national history and ritsuryo codes, such as Zokusetsu Zeben and Shin Ashimen no Mikoto.

江戸中期の儒学者，神道家。土佐の人。通称丹三郎，号は秦山（じんざん）。若くして上京，山崎闇斎，浅見絅斎について儒学，神道を学び，帰国後も江戸の渋川春海に入門して暦学を修めた。壮年，藩主に召されて儒員に加えられたが，のち罪を得て蟄居を命じられる。その間，国典を渉猟して学問を大成，〈国体の明徴〉を説いて後代に大きな影響を与えた。著書は《神代巻塩土伝（じんだいのまきしおつちでん）》《中臣祓塩土伝》《保建大記打聞》《土佐国式社考》《秦山集》があり，ほかに《俗説贅弁》《新蘆面命》等国史や律令格式をひろく渉猟した多数の書を編纂した。
