1663-1718 (Kanbun 3-Kyoho 3) A Confucian scholar and Shintoist from the mid-Edo period. Born in Tosa. Commonly known as Tanzaburo, his pen name was Jinzan. At a young age, he went to Kyoto to study Confucianism and Shintoism under Yamazaki Ansai and Asami Keisai. After returning to Japan, he studied calendar studies under Shibukawa Shunkai in Edo. In his prime, he was summoned by the feudal lord and joined the Confucian scholars, but was later convicted and ordered to live in seclusion. During that time, he studied national scriptures extensively, perfecting his studies and preaching the "signs of the national polity," which had a great influence on later generations. His works include Jindai no Maki Shiotsuchiden, Nakatomi no Harae Shiotsuchiden, Hoken Daiki Uchiki, Tosa Kokushiki Shako, and Jinzanshu, and he also compiled many other books that explored national history and ritsuryo codes, such as Zokusetsu Zeben and Shin Ashimen no Mikoto.
