Pears have been cultivated on the natural levees since ancient times, and a Ruisan pear tree in Oobetsuto, said to be 170 years old, is an ancient variety from when pear cultivation was first introduced and is designated a natural monument. This is the birthplace of the Kakubeishi lion, also known as Echigo lion, which was a traveling form of earning money during the farming off-season. A Kakubeishi lion is dedicated by a local preservation society to the Tsukigata Jizodo Festival from June 23rd to 25th. ...
