Mokpo

A port city located at the southwestern tip of Jeollanam-do, South Korea. It has an area of ​​47.06 square kilometers and a population of 250,336 (2000). It opened in 1897, became Mokpo-bu in 1910, and became Mokpo City in 1949. Located halfway between Nagasaki in Japan and Shanghai in China, it is a natural harbor that attracted the interest of the great powers from around the end of the 19th century. Industry has developed with the convenience of land and sea transportation and agricultural and marine products, but Mokpo City's abundant labor force is also a major factor in its industrial development. Shipbuilding, porcelain, brewing, steelmaking, rubber, hosiery, and cotton ginning industries are thriving. It also functions as a fishing port and passenger port, with a 3,000-ton car ferry operating between Mokpo and Jeju Island and a fast boat operating between Mokpo and Hongdo. Before World War II, it was an export port for rice and cotton. Yudalsan (228 meters) is a public park and also has a sculpture park on its eastern slope.

韓国（大韓民国）、全羅南道の南西端に位置する港湾都市。面積47.06平方キロメートル、人口25万0336（2000）。1897年に開港し、1910年木浦府となり、49年木浦市になった。日本の長崎と中国の上海(シャンハイ)との中間に位置するため、19世紀末ごろから列強諸国の関心を引いた天然の良港である。水陸交通の便利と農・水産物を背景にして工業が発達しているが、とくに豊富な労働力も木浦市工業発展の主要立地条件になっている。造船、磁器、醸造、製鋼、ゴム、メリヤス、繰綿などの工業が盛んである。漁港、旅客港の機能も重要で、木浦―済州島間は3000トン級のカーフェリーが、木浦―紅島間には快速艇が運航する。第二次世界大戦前は米と綿の輸出港であった。儒達山（228メートル）は市民の公園であり、その東斜面には彫刻公園もある。
