A port city located at the southwestern tip of Jeollanam-do, South Korea. It has an area of 47.06 square kilometers and a population of 250,336 (2000). It opened in 1897, became Mokpo-bu in 1910, and became Mokpo City in 1949. Located halfway between Nagasaki in Japan and Shanghai in China, it is a natural harbor that attracted the interest of the great powers from around the end of the 19th century. Industry has developed with the convenience of land and sea transportation and agricultural and marine products, but Mokpo City's abundant labor force is also a major factor in its industrial development. Shipbuilding, porcelain, brewing, steelmaking, rubber, hosiery, and cotton ginning industries are thriving. It also functions as a fishing port and passenger port, with a 3,000-ton car ferry operating between Mokpo and Jeju Island and a fast boat operating between Mokpo and Hongdo. Before World War II, it was an export port for rice and cotton. Yudalsan (228 meters) is a public park and also has a sculpture park on its eastern slope.
