A coelenterate (Cnidaria) of the family Barenidae in the class Hydrozoa. It is widely distributed in warm seas south of central Honshu. It is about 4 cm long, with a trophic section below the upper bell. The bell has a single pneumatophora at the top, and below that are two rows of inverted heart-shaped bells. The trophic section consists of antennae, trophozoites, tentacles, and reproductive bodies. It is named after the shape of the trophic section, which resembles the blinds that hang around the bells of firemen. The antennae in particular are golden, cylindrical, blind tubes that are arranged in a regular ring. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
