A semi-evergreen shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows wild on rocks on riverbanks west of the Kanto region. It grows to a height of less than 1m. It has long been cultivated as a horticultural plant, and there are many varieties cultivated as bonsai and garden trees. It blooms from May to July, with flowers ranging from deep red to white, and there are varieties with multiple blooms, stripes, and double flowers. It differs from azaleas in that it blooms later, has thin, sharp-pointed leaves, five stamens, and dark purple anthers. It is usually propagated by cuttings, but seeds are used for improved varieties. It is named after the fact that it blooms in the fifth lunar month (Satsuki).

関東以西の川岸の岩上に自生するツツジ科の半常緑低木。高さ1m以内。古くから園芸化されて品種が多く，盆栽や庭木として栽培されている。開花は５〜７月，花色は深紅〜白，咲き分け，絞り等があり，八重咲種もある。ツツジとの違いは，花期が遅く，葉が細く鋭頭，おしべが５本で葯(やく)が暗紫色な点。普通はさし木でふやし，品種改良には実生(みしょう)を行う。陰暦の５月（さつき）に咲くのでこの名がある。
