A semi-evergreen shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows wild on rocks on riverbanks west of the Kanto region. It grows to a height of less than 1m. It has long been cultivated as a horticultural plant, and there are many varieties cultivated as bonsai and garden trees. It blooms from May to July, with flowers ranging from deep red to white, and there are varieties with multiple blooms, stripes, and double flowers. It differs from azaleas in that it blooms later, has thin, sharp-pointed leaves, five stamens, and dark purple anthers. It is usually propagated by cuttings, but seeds are used for improved varieties. It is named after the fact that it blooms in the fifth lunar month (Satsuki). → Related article Azalea Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
