[The Political Process of Revolution]
The direct triggers of revolution are war (especially defeat), depression, and the failure of the ruling class, but behind these are situations in which tensions, conflicts, and strife between social classes and strata have increased, and the old social and political order has collapsed in whole or in part. This is called a "revolutionary situation." In this situation, the social foundations of the old political power are altered and shaken, and its ethical legitimacy and social validity are lost, so that the ruling class often resorts to naked violence to suppress the revolutionary upsurge of the masses.
