The abbreviated term OA began to be used around 1980, and is now an everyday term. The term office automation itself was used in the United States in the late 1950s. At the time, factory automation (FA) was progressing, and the application of computers to clerical work was contrasted with this and became office automation. However, the application of computers to clerical work from the 1950s to the mid-1970s was centered on standardized data processing, and did not extend to the entire office work.

略してOAという表現が1980年ころから使われはじめ，現在では日常用語となっている。オフィス･オートメーションの言葉自体は1950年代末にアメリカで使用されている。当時はファクトリー･オートメーション(FA)が進行しつつあり，コンピューターの事務処理への適用がこれと対比的に扱われてオフィス･オートメーションとなった。しかし50年代から70年代中ごろまでのコンピューターの事務面への適用は，定型化されたデータ処理を中心とするもので，オフィス全体の仕事にわたるものではなかった。
