Takeo Shrine

Japanese: 武雄神社 - たけおじんじゃ

Located in the center of Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, on the eastern foot of Mt. Mifune. Formerly a local shrine. The chief deity is Takeuchi no Sukune, and the secondary deities are Emperors Chūai and Ojin, and Empress Jingū. According to the shrine's legend, it was founded by Tomo no Yukiyori during the Tenpyō era (729-749). It was first mentioned in a document in 951 (Tenryaku 5), when it was one of the five Kishima shrines guardian of the county and a prefectural shrine (a shrine under the control of Dazaifu), and its chief priest was the Tomo clan. At the end of the Heian period, Nagashima Manor, owned by Rengeoin Temple, was established in Kishima County, and Takeo Shrine became the guardian shrine of the manor. Meanwhile, the chief priest Tomo clan became samurai lords, and when the Kamakura shogunate was established, Morimon (who from that time took the surname Fujiwara) became a vassal, and Yorimichi participated in the Mongol Wars.

佐賀県武雄市の中央部，御船山東麓に鎮座。旧郷社。主神は武内宿禰，副神は仲哀，応神両天皇と神功皇后。社伝では天平年間(729‐749)伴行頼の創祀という。確かな文献上の初見は951年(天暦5)で，当時郡鎮守杵島五社の一つであるとともに府社(大宰府支配下の神社)であり，神主は伴氏であった。平安時代の最末期，杵島郡内に蓮華王院領長島荘が成立し，武雄社は荘鎮守となった。一方神主伴氏は武士領主化し，鎌倉幕府が成立すると守門(そのころから藤原姓を称する)は御家人となり，頼門は蒙古合戦に参戦した。
