A dance drama from the coastal state of Kerala in southwest India. It developed from numerous folk dances and plays, and took shape around the 16th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries, it flourished under the patronage of the local nobles, some of whom even wrote the scripts themselves. Most were performed in the precincts of Hindu temples, and the performers were all men, but in recent years, female dancers have also started to play female roles. The stories are taken from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and are sung by singers in Malayalam, the language of Kerala. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
