Yoshio Takeuchi

Japanese:
Yoshio Takeuchi

Chinese philosopher. Doctor of Literature. Born in Mie Prefecture. Graduated from Kyoto Imperial University. Professor at Tohoku Imperial University, and later as a Goyogakari (official advisor) to the Imperial Household Ministry, he was involved in the education of the Crown Prince. Member of the Imperial Academy. Awarded the Order of Cultural Merit in 1960. He led the Chinese philosophy world in Japan from start to finish, and succeeded in establishing a scientific study of the history of thought by eliminating the subjective and old-fashioned respect for Confucianism. His work "The History of Chinese Thought," which was the first to incorporate Buddhist thought, proves this. His groundbreaking works "The Originality of Laozi" (1926) and "A Study of the Analects" (1939) closely examined the contents of the "Laozi" and "Analects" and empirically demonstrated that they were completed through many years of accumulation, establishing the method of document criticism of "Takeuchi Studies." He also aimed to strictly revise his translations of the "Analects of Confucius," "Laozi," and other works, and for this purpose he personally discovered and used many old Japanese manuscripts. As a result, he also became a member of the National Treasure Preservation Society.
