A former town in Mizuma County in the southwest of Fukuoka Prefecture. Located in the center of the Tsukushi Plain, it is a typical rice paddy area. Mechanization was implemented early on, and the town produces strawberries, onions, and persimmons, and livestock farming is thriving. It also produces sake. It is served by the Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line, and in recent years has become a commuter town for Kurume City. In February 2005, it was incorporated into Kurume City along with Tanushimaru Town in Ukiha County, Kitano Town in Mii County, and Jojima Town in Mizuma County. 16.10 km2 . Population 15,948 (2003).
